Hurricane Luis with 130 mph winds moved west toward the Leeward Islands Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as forecasters predicted strengthening over warmer Caribbean waters. The center in Miami said the storm would continue west for about three days threatening several Caribbean locations.

Sightseeing Plane Crash Kills Eight in Mesquite Nevada

Three Die In South Carolina Holiday Crashes
AP reports at least three people died on South Carolina roads this weekend. In Sumter County a three car crash killed Colin Nelson White age 28 and Marsha P. White age 36, both of Huntsville Alabama. Larry Earl Mack, 46, of Newport News Virginia, died when his car struck a tree on secondary 77 near Anderson.

A cool morning and sunny afternoon welcomed 183 riders at the Carolina First Hopeland Horse Trials at Aiken Mile Track. Competitors from the southeast range from Olympic caliber to novices as the two day event, sanctioned by the U S Combined Training Association, wraps up with cross country at Hopeland Farms on Banks Mill Road from 8 30 a m to 4 30 p m. The dressage and stadium jumping were held on the city owned Aiken track. With 150 stalls filled to capacity the event attracted offsite housing, and co organizer Julia Bradley credited the track and city for boosting participation from 120 four years ago.
