Augusta AP Frank Wills the Watergate security guard jailed on a shoplifting charge. The 34 year old, living in North Augusta, was arrested at Sky City discount store after officials said he stole tennis shoes. He remained jailed on a $1,000 bond.
Graniteville Company will spend 5 million dollars to buy 104 air jet looms and related equipment as part of a long term modernization to upgrade weaving divisions. Installation by mid 1983 will replace about 300 conventional looms and boost quality, fabric width, and speed. The move comes amid widespread U.S. textile capital spending despite recession.
On Labor Day many offices close including the Aiken Municipal Building County Office Complex and Aiken Chamber of Commerce. Aiken County Library and all banks close. The Aiken Standard adopts a holiday schedule with noon newspaper closings. North Augusta City Hall and Chamber of Commerce also close with banks. merchants vary hours and resume Tuesday.
On his return trip from Belize last week Whit Gibbons allegedly brought two live boa constrictors and two wolf spiders in his suitcase. Carol Gibbons quips that she won’t fetch his dirty laundry from his luggage.
Washington AP reports the U S unemployment rate stayed at 9.8 percent in August with 10.8 million Americans unemployed. Durable goods cutbacks and weak retail trade drove the drop in nonfarm payrolls while teen layoffs offset some losses after seasonal adjustments.
Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger toured east Jerusalem with Mayor Teddy Kollek in a two hour visit. Kollek emphasized daily life of Jerusalem’s 100000 Arabs and 300000 Jews while noting former minefields and sniper posts from 1967. Weinberger traveled by municipal mini bus and did not attend a formal speech.

The Aiken Community Concert Association moves its first concert to St John s Methodist Church after Laurens Street School auditorium deemed unsafe. Slovak Chamber Orchestra will perform Oct 2 at 8 p m with selections by Vivaldi Mozart Teleman Respighi Bach and Britten. Membership admission only. call for details.
