Secretary of State George P. Shultz accused the Soviet Union of shooting down a South Korean Boeing 747 with a missile, killing 269 aboard including Rep. Larry McDonald. The jetliner vanished after entering Soviet airspace, with up to eight fighters involved. Pentagon said MiG-23 fired. Japan and U.S. began search efforts.
