At Leavelle McCampbell High in Graniteville two senior students James Hicks and Ernest Kneece died when their car overturned after attempting to pass another vehicle on S C 191. The accident happened around 2 25 p m as classmates mourned at a football game later that night.

Michael Koon, a fifth grader, has been named Muscular Dystrophy Telethon poster child. The Aiken event, sponsored by the Aiken BPW, will be at WAKN WNEZ on Laurens Street with WRDW TV airing the telethon from 8:30 p.m. Sunday to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Michael will attend Saturday to greet volunteers and supporters.

Unemployment Drops to 5.9 Percent in August

The Labor Department reports August unemployment at 5.9 percent, with 160000 more jobs for a total of 94.6 million. Adult women and teenagers led gains while manufacturing jobs fell 50000, mostly in food processing, paper products, and rubber and plastics.
