Judge Rodney A Peeples orders income from the one cent Local Option Sales Tax to be distributed strictly by the ballot ordered priority for road projects. The ruling affects accounting but not the road timetable, and notes loans to counties and municipalities for project funding with repayment to follow. See SUIT, Page 7A.
The Aiken County School District faces a $764,000 shortfall after state cuts and will use contingency funds to cover the gap. The board reinstated $172,000 for minibuses for AAA and AAAA high schools from the district administration list. The Pine State Budget and Control Board earlier planned statewide reductions costing Aiken County schools about $2.7 million, with over $800,000 coming from Education.
USCAiken and Aiken Technical College face possible mid year cuts up to 4.5 percent amid revenue shortages from a sluggish economy. Officials say tightened budgets left them ready to absorb further reductions though state revenue remains uncertain for a year or two. USCA warns of about $500,000 in cuts and ATC $300,000 to $400,000, with ATC having already trimmed earlier this year.
Federal election in Aiken County drew very few voters with only 528 residents across 13 precincts casting ballots in the Second Congressional District Republican primary. The field of five candidates failed to attract broad support for the late Rep Floyd Spence seat. See ELECTION, Page 6A.
US jets struck near Kandahar before dawn and damaged a hospital, a Taliban doctor said 15 dead and 25 injured. Attacks also hit Taliban positions near Mazar e Sharif. Two ambulances and two pickup trucks were destroyed. Doctor Obeidullah Hadid reported a head injury. This marked the first Taliban escorted tour since the raids began Oct 1.

He defeated 12 year incumbent Eric Radford and ex mayor Richard Lamar to win the GOP nomination, with a recent vacation cited as relief from campaigning.
