Company settles state suit

Secretary of State Jim Miles announced the largest settlement in the state's charity regulation history, a voluntary 75000 payment by Civic Development Group Inc of New Jersey. The secretary also sought to block tax refunds to five bingo related charities, filing suit against the Department of Revenue, securing a restraining order, and scheduling a full hearing. The agreement includes monitoring of future fundraising calls and a do not call list. Civic Development Group funded several charities including the Southern Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association, Firefighters Charitable Foundation and Children's Charity Fund. Miles labeled the action a signal of higher fundraising standards in South Carolina.
