Four School Districts Opposed By Candidates

Fewer than 40 people gathered to hear the Aiken County Board of Education candidates discuss autonomy Blue Ribbon committees taxing authority and paperwork. Nine of the 10 candidates opposed dividing the district into four independent districts saying funding would be inequitable. Incumbent Albert Maddox noted much financial aid comes from industries in Areas I and III. Rod Greenway favored the plan only if funding were available. Other candidates named included David Clemens Robert Cooper J C Miller Durward Pridgen Robert T Tarrant Jr Sally Bigger William Butler and James Learnard. All supported Blue Ribbon committees and suggested stronger board responsiveness to committee recommendations.

Carter Appeals to Southern Voters in Columbia Visit

President Carter drew 200 to 300 supporters in cold rain at Township Auditorium as he urged a Southern vote four days before the election. He warned that Reagan's victory could threaten peace and tied the choice to war and peace for the nation. He met with high school students after a town hall and planned talks with Democratic leaders at the Governor's Mansion before a Tampa stop.

Langley reports at about 50 attendees heard three sheriff hopefuls Carrol Heath Ralph Gunnells and Frank Galardi at an anti pornography forum sponsor Citizens for Decency Through Law. They said citizens could petition for resignation if a sheriff fails to meet promises and urged stronger laws and federal support against interstate child porn.
