A Vallejo Times-Herald received a letter signed by the Zodiac claiming to be the killer for the first time in 13 years. The rambling note warns of targeting children on Halloween and will be tested for fingerprints and handwriting analysis. The Zodiac began correspondence after a December 1968 Vallejo shooting.
Maria Andy, rescued by nuns from being cast into a jungle bonfire for a deformity, learned to balance on new prosthetic legs at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Doctors say she may walk without crutches and possibly dance in red shoes.

Du Pont will not renew its 36 year government contract to run the Savannah River Plant nuclear facility in South Carolina. About 10,000 workers are expected to be offered positions with the new contractor. Current contract expires Sept 30, 1989, with 12 months notice option.
