After a televised debate both President Carter and Ronald Reagan hailed their performances as they head into the final week of the 1980 campaign. Each pressed for key big states Texas and Pennsylvania amid a close race. Carter called Reagan's foreign policy dangerous while Reagan blamed inflation and unemployment on Carter and said he could not detail policy differences.
voters offered varied verdicts on last night’s presidential debate with Carter receiving some support and Reagan praised by others. Several officials said neither candidate clearly won, while a few leaned toward Reagan citing stronger points and factual presentations.
John Milton Gaver of Greentree Stable turns 80 after a storied career that includes the 1942 Kentucky Derby win with Shut Out. He recalls the race as a rush and looks back on long years with Greentree, now retired, with a birthday party planned.
