The Aiken Standard gathered crowd say about Steeplechase letters forming a praise list. Respondents named words like synergistic energetic equestrian charismatic exiting scintillating and more describing the horse event and outdoor atmosphere.
Tom Voss saddled three steeplechase winners at the Aiken meet led by Gryffindor. Jockey Xavier Aizpuru rode four wins and one second across five mounts, boosting his 2007 total to 19. Voss praised stable support from Jack Fisher and noted rides for Jonathan Sheppard as well. Gryffindor, a seven year old bay gelding by Peaks and Valleys out of A Sunny Society, carried New York pedigree.
Gryffindor led early and repulsed Calvin Houghland's Sheriff Dillon in a steeplechase at Camden where an objection was filed but disallowed. Rafter rode Sheriff Dillon. a tough, front running contest followed with photos on page 11A.
Downtown Georgia Avenue hosted the annual Jack O Lantern Jubilee with pumpkin displays and crowds. Britt Sanders from the North Augusta Department of Public Safety praised turnout while city sponsors included the City of North Augusta SRP Federal Credit Union Comcast SCE G Busbys Clear Choice and Parks Recreation and Leisure Services. Vendors offered food crafts jewelry and sweets.
Aiken County Administrator Clay Killian leads an internal review of county employee credit card use. Employees have been asked to turn in their county issued cards for examination, and the review is not due to specific wrongdoing.
