New York AP reports the former Shah of Iran remained in good condition after the last gallstone was removed. Doctors at New York Hospital Connection monitor for infection and to ensure no additional stones develop before possible travel in a few days.
President Carter urges American honor and solidarity to Iran during tonight's 9 p.m. EST news conference. He pledges the United States will not yield to militant blackmail as 49 hostages remain captive in Tehran. He says hostages were threatened at pistol point and pressured to recant statements.
David Boothe a fourth grader at North Aiken Elementary School won a slab of bacon in a recent turkey shoot sold to Fawcett Publishing Co. The event highlights that a young student can claim prize money through local recreation activities.
United Nations Security Council postponed its debate on the U S Iran crisis until Saturday night awaiting Iran's acting foreign minister in New York. Speakers included Secretary General Waldheim and Bolivian council president Palacios de Vizzio urging Iran to release the 49 hostages. Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini rejected any U N backed resolution and a proposed package deal linking hostages' release to an international probe of the shah’s alleged crimes.
The Aiken County Council voted five to four to replace John Henry Williams with C Wesley Smith as part time attorney. Smith, an Oklahoma native and former engineer, will serve on an hourly retainer until a formal contract is set, following an executive session last night. Williams resigned effective November 7 after serving since 1975 amid heated July discussions.
Edward M. Yarbrough former Aiken County Sheriff's Department investigator asked for help to clear his record after a council hearing about his termination. Sheriff Paul D. Grant cited a 350 page SLED report alleging false information, lack of cooperation, and immunity granted to others in criminal cases. Yarbrough disputed the charges and claimed cooperation with SLED and guidance from the solicitor's office.
Beginning December weekend many towns host Christmas parades with multiple routes. Jackson kicks off at 11 a.m. from Jackson High School along S.C. 125 to Silverton Street. Graniteville Warrenville parade starts 4:30 p.m. at Leavelle McCampbell High School ending at Warrenville traffic light. Other parades follow in New Ellenton Aiken North Augusta Langley Bath Clearwater and more with routes through Main Street Union Street Laurens Street Carolina Avenue and Georgia Avenue ending at various community centers and schools.
The Aiken County School District finished fiscal year 1978 79 with a general fund balance of 298 364 and an overall positive audit across budget areas as of June 30 1979. Superintendent Willis called ending the year in the black favorable given a 32 million budget. The district funds three proposed high school renovations totaling 22 8 million with 2 9 million spent so far. Kindergarten enrollment rose districtwide by 50, with some students reassigned due to space at a few units.
