A special eight page election section will appear in tomorrow's Aiken Standard. It provides biographicals on candidates and issues, sample ballots, and a two page map of county council districts. This will be the last time the information is printed as a public service. Voters should keep the section for reference before voting Tuesday.
Aides to Sen. Bob Dole report the Republican vice presidential candidate cannot recall calling this century’s wars Democrat wars during a national debate with Walter Mondale ten days earlier. They say Dole was under pressure from GOP leaders to back away from the remark as it hurt the campaign.
Washington officials fear Justice Department disclosures on South Korean lobbying could undermine public backing for Korea's defense. The peninsula remains a flashpoint for a possible great power clash, yet disclosures may shift focus from high stakes in the region amid waning Congressional support for South Korea over dictatorial regime concerns.
The United Auto Workers warned Chrysler of a possible strike by 118,000 workers in 22 states and Canada if no contract is reached by November 5. UAW Vice President Douglas Fraser said a walkout is possible but not desired and could be averted.
Former Senator Edward J. Gurney is declared innocent of perjury after a retrial stemming from a 1974 Jacksonville grand jury inquiry into a political fundraising operation. Geneva talks opened with little hope for a settlement on Rhodesia's transition to black rule. Secretary Kissinger directed Africa expert William Schaufele Jr. to Geneva and suggested he might attend if needed. Smith backs a whites’ veto and police army control, while blacks demand immediate black control.
President Ford seeks to separate his administration from Richard Nixon and distances his stance on wars as Jimmy Carter campaigns in New York Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh. Mondale takes a day off after a Pennsylvania New York New Jersey West Virginia swing as Ford invokes Nixon less cautiously than before.
The Aiken area will see continued cool conditions with lows in the low 40s and highs in the 50s. Rain possible Saturday and Sunday, with slightly warmer temperatures expected for the weekend into the 60s.
