Aiken County Auditor Cyrus Spradley says 104,000 tax notices are printed and will be mailed early next week after triple checking for accuracy. Senior writer Philip Lord notes area residents will receive their bills by mail and discussions call the move controversial due to potential errors.
Property owners in the City of Aiken and Aiken County will see an 8 mill decrease in city taxes, while county property owners face a 4.2 mill county rise and a 15 mill boost by the Board of Education. North Augusta residents will receive a separate January bill with deadlines set for January 15 and April 30 respectively.
Downtown North Augusta hosted the annual Jack O Lantern Jubilee with kids dressing as lambs and other characters. Mindee Kelly cradled her 4 month old daughter Trinity as families enjoyed games raffles music and refreshments in a family friendly parade day led by Belvedere First Baptist Church.
Clear skies and fall weather drew fans to the 12th running of the Aiken Fall Steeplechase at Ford Conger Field. The nationally sanctioned meet featured four hurdle races and two flat races with many entries and spirited tailgating and fellowship amid a busy event day.
Jockey and trainer teamed to win three races while visitors enjoyed shops in the Village of Shops infield events such as carriage and stick horse parades and a hat contest. Vendors offered hats jewelry toys plus cigars with local and out of state sellers including Pipe Dreams The Curiosity Shop Sequoia Springs Walkabout Hats and Honda Cars of Aiken.
A FITS study of over 3000 infants and toddlers shows high calorie intake and excess sodium from french fries pizza candy and soda. Many under age two have no fruit or vegetables and 1 to 2 year olds exceed daily calorie needs by about 30 percent.
