Florence teacher of year targets state dropout rate
Nancy Townsend of Wilson High School in Florence, named South Carolina teacher of the year for 1991, warns that tomorrow’s dropout rate drives next year’s tax burden. Her exit exam writing classes boosted 23 of 25 students to pass. Townsend’s approach blends rigorous writing projects with values from the 1950s to foster consistency, effort, and eligibility for the National Teacher of the Year program.
