NFL leaders pursue a new commissioner to guide the league through ongoing growth and evolving challenges. The search considers candidates from sports, business, and international markets as owners and executives weigh the league's future direction.
Transportation officials at home and abroad track a 15 mile private toll road in northern Virginia proposed to extend the Dulles Toll Road from Leesburg to Washington. Ralph L. Stanley of Toll Road Corp. of Virginia predicts it will clear congestion and generate customers from the traffic jam. The project costs about 155 million dollars and would create a third east west route to the capital.
A China Airlines Boeing 737 carrying 49 passengers and seven crew members crashed into a mountainous area while en route from Hualien to Taipei. The jet departed Hualien at 6:54 p.m. and crashed into a village about five minutes later. No further details were available.
Fair skies are forecast tonight with a low in the low 40s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 70s.

Government documents reveal a loss of more than two grams of tritium from a Tennessee test shipment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Investigators did not rule out theft though no conclusive evidence was found. Production reactors were shut for safety upgrades and commercial shipments paused since July.
A four hour search for a 16 year old fugitive ended when he escaped into a wooded area after police arrested three suspects in a stolen vehicle case. The vehicle was reported stolen near Atlanta and the youths were later charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. The child was unharmed and placed with his grandmother in Balltown. Joe Nathan Green and Linwood Johnson, both from Aiken, were among those charged.
The U S economy grew 2.5 percent in the July September quarter despite the weakest trade performance in six years and a $4 billion income loss from Hurricane Hugo. Growth was led by consumer spending on autos, with inflation easing to 2.9 percent as the year to date stays on target.
Congress approves a 3.45 billion disaster aid package for California to avert a government shutdown and aid Bay Area recovery. The measure includes 2.85 billion in federal funds plus SBA disaster access and Bay Bridge repair funds, with Bush expected to sign.
The Democratic Study Group accused FEMA of fighting disasters without leaders citing slow Bush admin naming of appointees. The report warns of weak clout delaying aid to South Carolina while FEMA says centers opened four days after disaster declaration.
