DHEC seeks consent order to redirect 150 million penalty
South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control director Catherine Templeton said the agency tried to redirect a 150 million penalty toward underfunded liquid waste work at the Savannah River Site but DOE declined. She announced plans for a consent order after a Florida forum and noted DOE’s dispute-resolution call amid ongoing tank closure delays and sequestration funding limits. Templeton warned of potential penalties totaling 193 million for fiscal year 2016 and daily fines if the Salt Waste Processing Facility startup and tank closures are not completed.
