A fire severely damaged Johnnie Thompson’s carport and two rooms at his home just outside North. Firefighters took about two hours to control the blaze reported at 9 09 p m Tuesday. No one was injured. Authorities seek cause.
A 15 year old boy was found guilty in Greenville of aggravated assault and battery and interfering with school bus operation for throwing an asphalt rock that injured Middleschool teacher Catherine Merritt on a Parker Middle School bus. The youth, not named, will be evaluated in Columbia before sentencing by Family Court Judge Wyatt Saunders. The incident occurred mid February as Merritt was leaving the bus, suffering cuts and bruises to her head and eye.

Aiken man John Patrick Harmon testified he provoked no attack at H Odell Weeks Activities Center park last July, where two individuals Tyrus Lee Laney and Keith Dunbar face lynching in the second degree and assault charges. He said he had not met the three juveniles involved before the incident. The case also relates to a juvenile matter in family court.
Harmon testified the trouble began after he and his daughter passed a table where Laney Dunbar and others sat. He said Laney began making sexual comments about his daughter and he was called whitey. He claimed the group followed him and attacked him, striking him and kicking him as he tried to protect his child. Daniel Vetsch corroborated by saying he witnessed the confrontation near the park tennis courts.
The Aiken County Board of Education unanimously approved a letter to Gov. Beasley supporting using the $130 million the Chem Nuclear waste dump could generate over 10 years. Funds would fund facilities improvements and scholarships on a 70 30 split, with 77 percent of county facilities built before 1970 and four schools from 1950.
Rep James Roland Smith says the plan aims to raise near 130 million for schools, confident it will pass in the GOP-led House and should pass the Senate.
