A judge refused bond Thursday for 28 year old Horry County man Nicholas G Macklen linked to an August burglary and botched getaway on the Intracoastal Waterway that killed 13 year old Schofield Middle School student Shayne Odermatt. Aiken Woodcarver Ned Peterson created a bass wood sculpture titled Arkansas Weightlifter for the fair exhibit. The piece, carved during a move from Arizona to Aiken, took about three weeks and uses gauges knives v-tools wood burning and acrylic paint. Peterson previously won best character for another piece at the same fair.
Paula Phillips, 42, of 229 East Pine Log Road, died after an SUV surged forward while she directed her 13 year old son to move the family vehicle in the driveway. Coroner Tim Carlton called it a horrible tragic event and noted no malicious intent.
