Frederick Maryland authorities arrested two men early Thursday after finding them sleeping in a car at a rest stop. They were wanted in connection with the deadly sniper attacks that have killed ten people and wounded three in the Washington area. The men were not immediately charged in the sniper case.
Police arrested a former Army soldier and a companion at an interstate Maryland rest area in connection with the Washington area sniper killings. authorities say the suspects may not be tied to the case and identify one as John Allen Muhammed, 42, a trained sniper. A juvenile, Lee Malvo, is reported as traveling with the second arrestee.
Montgomery officials say federal investigators probe a September Montgomery fatal shooting for possible ties to the Washington area sniper attacks. Mayor Bobby Bright notes no verification yet of any link, as investigators request files and evidence, including a bullet from the scene.
With seven days left in 2002, United Way of Aiken County is far from its 2.75 million goal. Donations and pledges total 2,064,121 about 75 percent, says Chris Slaughter, director of marketing. United Way funds 32 agencies offering more than 60 service programs in Aiken and surrounding counties. Volunteers continue outreach as the campaign stretches toward the target.
