Byron Looper, the Republican rival of state senator Tommy Burks, was arrested outside his home and charged with first degree murder in Burks’s death in Cumberland County Tennessee. Burks, 58, a longtime Democrat, was shot in his pickup near a pumpkin patch hog farm in Monterey as a school group prepared to visit. Looper had been missing since the incident and was later held at Cumberland County Jail.
Deaths Mildred Anderson of Williston and John H Harris of Aiken are reported in obituary notices on page 2B. The notices record their names and likely dates and surviving relations as typical in local memorial listings.

Republican Gov. David Beasley seeks a Greenville County Circuit Court order to halt ads attacking his first term. The suit targets Collins Entertainment Corp, Schafer Co, South of the Border Restaurant Inc, and Ace-HI Advertising, demanding disclosure of campaign ad spending to the Ethics Commission. A judge won’t be assigned before the election week November 2.
South Carolina public schools feel the pinch of a predicted national teacher shortage. A SC Center for Teacher Recruitment survey found nearly 300 vacancies statewide with 61 of 86 districts responding. Charleston County shows 60 openings of about 3,000 positions and Richland 1 District 1 reports 46 openings of about 2,000 jobs.
In Williston, the 30 member Williston-Elko Blue Devils Marching Band endures two weeks of July practice before school starts. Drum major Rachel Alsept, 16, notes the hard hours and love of the band that keeps members committed. Band director Tom Henke and assistants stress discipline and responsibility to build a big sound from a small ensemble.
Four candidates, all men with ties to North Augusta and Belvedere, seek the District Five seat on the Aiken County Board of Education. Stephens, Able, Goforth, and Piper run on issues of school safety, overcrowding, and budget stewardship with family ties to local schools cited.
