Attorneys for the Legislature contend the Confederate banner atop the State House has legal authority to stay, while State House lawyers say only the Legislature can decide its fate. The briefs precede a court hearing next month in a suit led by Columbia Mayor Bob Coble and business leaders seeking removal of the flag.
In Greenville the Liberty police officer Sgt. Kenneth Duncan was cleared of wrongdoing after a cruiser collision with Maude Crane's car, killing the 80 year old woman. The Patrol said Duncan was properly performing his duties at the time of the crash.
