Aiken mayor H. Odell Weeks, 83, expected to be released from University Hospital this afternoon after heart surgery and a catheterization. Weeks, who announced in August he would not seek re election, was admitted Oct 11 for a heart attack and had an aorta procedure on Oct 12.
A 134 foot thermometer is rising in Baker California as the world s tallest thermometer. The height honors Death Valley s 134 degree record from 1913 believed to be the Western Hemisphere s highest. Baker sits 100 miles southwest of Las Vegas on Interstate 15 as the Gateway to Death Valley.

The 18th Aiken County Jaycee Fair ended Sunday with strong attendance close to 25 000. Jaycee president Randy Stowe praised perfect weather and noted Tuesday night drew the largest crowd of the week aided by Reithoffer rides including the Tomahawk Ring of Fire and giant wheel.
