North Augusta officials voted 6 0 to keep planning commission’s denial of a zoning change for a 2.65 acre West Martintown Road site. Wyatt Development sought C 2 neighborhood zoning to build a 10 000 square foot CVS drug store, but critics warned of traffic and neighborhood disruption. Local residents voiced concern over conflicts of interest and the unusual property location. The council supported the planning commission, leaving the decision with the current zoning.
North Augusta area youth from Aiken and Richmond Counties pledged to live drug free at the 1997 Red Ribbon Border Tying Event. Officials from Aiken Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services United Way of Aiken County and area agencies led the program at the S C Welcome Center with Mayor Fred Cavanaugh and Sheriff’s representatives stressing the steps to say no to drugs and the importance of DARE.
Accused shooter Raymond Day, 20, faces possible life in prison for the March 31, 1996 killing of Cecil Renew. Prosecutors say Renew was found shot to death in his Muddy Branch Road pickup, with a fatal head wound. Defense argues Renew was dangerous and killed by self defense, citing a violent history and an alleged plot against Deborah Bouchillon. Bouchillon, not in court, is expected to testify for the state.
Det. Robert Anderson testified Raymond Day voluntarily admitted shooting Renew two days after her body was found. Day said he killed him in cold blood and that he deserved to die. He claimed investigators prompted the confession before rights were read.
