Obesity Surgery Proves Higher Death Risk Than Thought
A Medicare study of 16 155 patients from 1997 to 2002 finds death within a year after obesity surgery is higher than prior reports, especially for ages 35 to 44 and 65 plus, with mortality rising for men. The work, in JAMA, notes possible complications from malnutrition to infections and discusses Medicare coverage and surgical types.
