Robbery probe after envelopes snatched near bank

Aiken Department of Public Safety investigates a strong armed robbery in downtown Aiken. Woman Chitania Pryor said a black male grabbed two envelopes containing 16120 cash and a 30 money order as she approached Bank of America on Laurens Street. Bloodhounds tracked the suspect toward Highland Park but were stood down after about an hour.

Aiken Jaycee County Fair Opens With Music And Rides

The Aiken Jaycees County Fair starts today running through Sunday. Gates open 5:30 pm today through Thursday with four big musical acts on Friday and Saturday headlined by Kenny Chesney on Saturday. The Exposition Building hosts juried arts and crafts, with prizes in all categories. Reithoffer Shows Midway offers rides games and food, and pay one price days apply today Thursday and Saturday plus Sunday from 1 pm.

Supreme Court wins for poker machines. referendum blocked

Jaytime Distributors & Amusement Co. Inc. of Greenville challenges the SC Supreme Court ruling that voided the November 2 referendum on the $2.8 billion-a-year video gambling industry. The court preserved the ban taking effect July 1 while deeming the voting provisions an improper delegation of legislative authority. Jaytime may seek Supreme Court review if the state supreme court declines to hear the appeal. The decision leaves the industry facing a possible shutdown, with new regulations contingent on voter approval or rejection.

Rally in the Valley canceled after Supreme Court ruling

The Aiken County Chapter of Changing South Carolina Vote No canceled the Rally in the Valley at Midland Valley High School slated for Sunday due to a Supreme Court ruling that the November referendum is unconstitutional and will require no vote. Ginny Allen at 649-1438 advised. Joytime said the law presents an impossible choice. Eppes argued the law and actions threaten constitutional rights and create a chilling effect.
