The Sertoma Club shared engaging tales about Aiken's past during a community gathering. Members explored local heritage, notable residents, and milestones shaping the city’s character and growth over the decades.
Coverage previews the 2012 election as profiles of candidates for probate judge clerk of courts coroner and county auditor. Voters explore backgrounds campaigns and issues ahead of the Sunday edition recap.
Banners wave as the Western Carolina State Fair opens. Crystal McCormick works the Fishing Hole booth for a private owner and describes the daily surprise of game assignments. The schedule includes Circle C Petting Zoo and Mike’s Wild West acts, with events running all day and some twice daily. USC Aiken Rodeo features bull and bareback riding, calf roping and steer wrestling, while Kenny Thomas founded the event as a fundraiser for USCA baseball. Proceeds fund equipment, scholarships and trips. nightly golf cart giveaways and Saturday activities include a pumpkin contest and a diaper derby and pie eating.
Instructional materials used by local schools and colleges are on public display at the University of South Carolina Aiken. The Materials Review Panels’ final recommendation collection is available at USCA until November 23 in Room 238D, 471 University Way. Residents may submit comments and suggestions during the review period.
The university hosts resident comments on various subject volumes including Agribusiness and Marketing to Health Science and English. The State Board of Education will review input before finalizing Interior Design and Teaching courses and adoption occurs in December. Materials must remain on campus and cannot be checked out.
