West German commandos stormed a hijacked Lufthansa jet at Mogadishu airport and freed 86 hostages. Three of four hijackers were killed while nine hostages and a commando were lightly wounded and one passenger hospitalized after collapsing. A hijacker woman was seriously wounded and hospitalized.

Diplomatic sources in Hanoi say about 60,000 Cambodians have received asylum in Vietnam over the past year. They live in desperate conditions on the outskirts of Saigon and in western provinces, many were small businesspeople or workers displaced after the 1975 Communist takeover.

Plea bargain dismisses embezzlement and conspiracy counts from a June indictment. Mrs Larue McGee former deputy clerk and wife of County Councilman Homer L McGee faced dismissed charges of conspiracy and aiding and abetting embezzlement. Judge Robinson noted factors of punishment and rehabilitation and noted personal appeals supporting Mrs Scott’s character from friends and church pastor.
Washington AP reports that precautionary buys of higher priced emergency gas by six interstate pipelines have reduced feared winter plant closings. Four pipelines now foresee no major disruption, while two expect only limited impact, with some shortages still possible.
Nearly half of South Carolina residents qualify for Title XX social services yet many do not know what is available. The state has 43 million dollars in Title XX funds this year, but experts say more is needed to meet demand. A community meeting at St. John’s United Methodist Church highlighted communication gaps as 31 services were outlined, with seven not available locally. A pastor observer questioned whether the public was truly receiving benefits.
