The Commerce Department reports housing construction fell 9.3 percent in September to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.58 million units, the steepest drop since May. Both single family and apartment building declined with single-family starts down 10.4 percent to 962,000.
Gov. Dick Riley came back from a month-long European trade and investment mission tired but upbeat about future impact. He expects at least three foreign companies to invest in South Carolina with possibly four more, naming prospects in France Germany and Belgium. The French firm could employ about 300 people and may announce within months.
A New England Journal of Medicine study shows uterine cancer risk remains elevated for a decade after stopping estrogen, prompting regular gynecologic exams for women who used the hormone. Dr. Samuel Shapiro of Boston University cautions the findings may alter views on menopause treatment risk.

Abbas reportedly urged non harm to passengers and explained the objective.
