A pre-dawn storm with heavy rain and winds up to 94 mph in London and southern England killed at least four people. Trees, buildings, and power lines were toppled, plunging much of the region into darkness.

A Chinese made Silkworm missile fired by Iran struck the Kuwaiti flagged Sea Isle City in Kuwaiti waters near Bahrain injuring at least 18 and starting a fire that was quickly contained. The attack follows another strike a day earlier on a U S owned supertanker in the same area. Pentagon officials cautioned on details.
The Sea Isle City, a U S flagged tanker, was struck in Kuwaiti waters as it left anchorage en route to fuel piers. At least 18 injured including the master and radio man both Americans with several in critical condition. US warships escorted Kuwaiti tankers amid ongoing investigations into the attacker or attackers.
The Labor Department reports a 0.3 percent rise in the producer price index for September with energy costs down 3.7 percent. Food prices advance 1.1 percent while fruits vegetables pork beef and veal rise and energy and housing costs offset the overall gain.
In Midland Texas rescuers drilling through rock broke a 2 inch hole to reach 18 month old Jessica McClure trapped 22 feet underground. A 20 inch shaft was then bored to pull her to safety as rescue workers remained hopeful about a rapid breakthrough.
A two man ten woman jury failed to reach a verdict after more than 12 hours deliberating the Perry Bush Smith retrial in McCormick Circuit Court. Judge J M Morris ordered a mistrial delaying further proceedings and signaling a March 1988 retrial.
