The City of Aiken vote unan imously to issue and sell up to 4.2 million in water and sewer bonds to banks at lower interest. Current loans carry rates 2.24 and 3 to 5.1 percent. reissuing the 1997 bond could save 100 000 to 200 000 over five years with five payments left. Bids open Oct 26 at noon. second reading to follow.
The Aiken AAUW branch recognized volunteers and educators for their service to Aiken County's children. Recipients include Books n Things sale volunteers and district leaders such as Elizabeth Everitt and Gaye Pappas, with gifts funded by profits and donations to support local education initiatives.
The AAUW Educational Foundation awards grants to 215 women nationwide this year, totaling over 3 million dollars for graduate and postgraduate education. Local supporters include Barb Uskup on equine projects, Suzanne Jackson of the Red Cross, Sharon Rodgers of United Way, and others recognized for community work with AAUW and related groups.
A fundraiser for the Polo Training Foundation and the Aiken Area Junior Polo Group is set for Friday at Whitney Field 5 p.m. The event features three flights, five teams, a Lowcountry boil, dancing, live band, silent auction and cash bar. Awards for Interscholastic and Intercollegiate Players of the Year will be presented at dinner. Proceeds support junior polo education and opportunities.
The Runyon family of Beech Island has been named recipients of up to $10,000 in energy efficiency upgrades from the Help My House contest by Aiken Electric Cooperative and the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina. Officials announced at a visit with Lennox Heating and Cooling representatives and a 7 foot lightbulb mascot.
