Belle City Amusements sets up over 40 rides on two midway sections at the Aiken fairgrounds ahead of the ten day event October 16 to 25. Gate admission is six dollars with a fifteen dollar Mega Pass granting unlimited rides.
State Farm, a major South Carolina insurer, plans an average 19 percent rate hike on policies renewed after Feb 1 and higher charges for new policies from Dec 15. The company had sought about 27 percent but settled after Consumer Advocate Elliott Elam Jr. intervened. A cap of 25 percent was agreed, with past claim costs cited to justify higher premiums.
Ed Giobbe, a former Aiken City Council candidate, was appointed to the Aiken Planning Commission by a 6-1 vote. Council member Don Sprawls opposed, having defeated Giobbe in September, amid controversy over Giobbe’s ties to the Smart Growth Aiken movement. Eleven residents spoke in favor during the public hearing.
DHEC warns the risk of mosquito bites remains until the season’s first killing frost. In Aiken temperatures linger in the 40s but not yet at frost level, while health officials stress vigilance for West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis as cases rise in animal populations.
