Significance rediscovered marker marks Aiken history center
Aiken rediscovered a 1836 South Carolina Geodetic Survey marker at Park Avenue and Union Street. City crews found the six by five inch granite marker while preparing to install a new marker honoring former mayor and surveyor Charles M. Jones. The original site marks the city growth projection from a 1909 blueprint. A recognition ceremony is planned for Oct. 22 with state and local officials attending.
