Woman pleads guilty in death of infant son after 18 years
GREENVILLE A woman who waited 18 years to come forward pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the May 1988 death of her eight month old son. Patterson told Beaufort police she held the baby to her breast until he stopped breathing and then called 911. The infant died from a brain vessel rupture. officials said the cause of the rupture was never determined. Patterson expressed remorse in a statement read by her attorney. She had been charged with murder in 2006 and accepted a lesser charge due to the nature of the case and her age.
