Tom Glavine and the Atlanta Braves delivered a 1-0 playoff victory over the Houston Astros. The pitching duo silenced the Astros as Atlanta extended its postseason mastery with a strong shutout performance.
Aiken resident Yvette Cribb, 19, has been identified as the driver of a car involved in a fatal collision on Old Friar Road Tuesday night. Lance Cpl. RK Hughes said Billy Chapman, 18, also fled the scene on foot.

A 54 year old North Augusta resident Alvin Mackie died when his 1984 Chevrolet S 10 pickup pulled into the path of a westbound 1996 Freightliner on I 20 near the 23 mile marker. The crash occurred about 11 35 pm Wednesday with Curtis Moultrie 57 of Charleston driving the box trailer rig and sustaining non life threatening injuries. The two vehicles crossed the median and came to rest on the eastbound side. Mackie died at the scene and the pickup was heavily damaged. The report cites the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Judge James C Williams Jr cited previous felonies and a fatal armed robbery in King County Washington. The jury returned guilty verdicts after a brief deliberation affirming the three strikes based sentence.
Federal officials said a criminal probe is under way into the source of anthrax contamination at a Boca Raton supermarket tabloid office after a third worker was exposed. Attorney General John Ashcroft declined to name a source and said there is no evidence the anthrax came from a lab.
