Wright, a former EEOC official and Charlotte Observer editor, alleges intrusive behavior but says she is not claiming harassment. Wright says she testified out of empathy for Anita Hill and believes Hill.
A New York Times CBS News poll finds 38 percent of women say they have faced sexual harassment at work with 4 percent reporting the incidents. The timing coincides with Anita Hill's Senate testimony accusing Judge Clarence Thomas of harassment.
Gussie Johnson, 76, recalls serving as a detachment commander and basic trainer in World War II, one of the first women officers in the Women's Army Corps. Her memoir and equipment will be showcased at the South Carolina State Museum later this year, with memories of Daytona Beach and Des Moines shaping a historic career.
A.P. report from Ames Iowa notes many college students hold multiple credit cards and rack up high interest debt. Iowa State University counselors say students can graduate with large balances after opening as many as 15 cards. Across the nation seven of ten undergraduates at four year schools carry at least one card.
Columbia dentist Fred L. Ridenhour Jr. closed his private practice in 1990 and died of AIDS nine months later at his home. Patients debated disclosure with one saying they would not have continued treatment if informed. Coroner Frank Barron confirmed the death and noted minimal risk of patient transmission from a health care worker. Dr Jeffrey L. Jones, the state epidemiologist, echoed the extremely small risk.
The Commerce Department reports a 0.7 percent, seasonally adjusted gain in September retail sales to 153.3 billion, led by durable goods. August's figures were revised to a 0.6 percent decline. Auto sales rose 3.0 percent while nonauto retail moved up 0.1 percent.
