Senator George McGovern of South Dakota says the Senate likely would confirm conservative West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd if Nixon nominates him to the Supreme Court. Fred Harris of Oklahoma would oppose Byrd, citing concerns about civil rights record and legal experience for a high court justice.
In Marietta Ohio a church boiler explosion killed five people including a 14 year old girl and her teacher 30 year old Michael Murphy. Fourteen others in the Sunday school wing were injured as debris fractured the building.
Reagan as special emissary to President Nixon met Chiang Kai-shek in Taipei. A spokesman said Nixon sent a message to Chiang, but its contents were not disclosed. The meeting followed a speech in which Reagan promised continued US backing for Nationalist China's full participation in international affairs.
Vice President Spiro Agnew urged Congress not to curb military aid to Greece saying it is a key NATO member and essential to U S security. He warned lawmakers that restricting assistance would impair and impede policy during a two week foreign trip.
The South Carolina Public Service Commission plans hearings on Southern Bell Telephone Co rate hikes. An average one and two party user would pay about $1 more monthly, businesses about $2.25 more, and a new long distance toll rate would raise costs for operator assisted calls.
K. Keith Stroup heads the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws and seeks adult legalization. Since its January founding with Playboy Foundation funds, the effort has produced no legislative gains.
Six defendants indicted for the murders of two Belvedere motorcycle club members were set to go on trial in Aiken County General Sessions Court. Motions for separate trials could be heard. The victims, William Martin Wolfe and Thomas Bolin, were found tied and stabbed, dying of strangulation.

Northrup Knox of the Aiken Polo Club announces the United States 16 Goal Championship Polo Tournament will likely run seven to ten days around mid April in Aiken. Teams from Texas Oklahoma Florida Illinois Minnesota Massachusetts and Pennsylvania are invited. The event aims to coincide with Florida season ends and marks polo’s 90th year in Aiken with hopes for a strong turnout and future celebrations.

IRA commander Joe Cahill says women carry devices and want sniper roles amid ongoing violence in Northern Ireland.
A New York political scientist predicts the South Carolina Legislature will be knocked down in the courts quickly. William J D Boyd says residency rules favoring small counties are discriminatory and the General Assembly is wasting time on motions that courts will overturn. He urges open hearings and better pay and notes South Carolina ranks 44th in legislative effectiveness.
A Jackson area bridge over the Savannah River is set for study. James A. Goodman heads a committee seeking a full survey from the S C Highway Department and endorsements from the county delegation. The report highlights $896 860 in state taxes and over $1 million annually in corporate income tax gains tied to the project.
A cemetery worker and two soldiers died in separate weekend traffic incidents in Aiken County. The victims were identified as a 47 year old Langley resident named Tom Dolittle and two unidentified soldiers.
