Beech Island Ferris wheel stands as landmark owner says

The 40 foot tall two person bucket Ferris wheel on Shorty Hall's property near Old Jackson Highway in Beech Island serves as a landmark though it has not operated since Hall bought it at auction about a decade ago. Hall recalls buying the 1940s model carnival ride to fulfill a childhood wish for an Erector Set, disassembling and reassembling it with a crew, and then locking it for preservation. Lights and a star decorate it at Christmas, and Hall notes a proposed sale to buyers from another state that never materialized. The Eli Bridge Co. remains a long time maker of rides in Jacksonville Illinois, tied to the wheel's origin.

History of the Ferris wheel and its origins

The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair featured the Ferris wheel as a center piece to rival Paris landmarks. Debuting May 1, 1893, it drew about 1.5 million riders before closing. The idea inspired by George Ferris and later replicated as the Big Eli wheel in Jacksonville, Illinois on May 23, 1900.
