Grand Jury Foreman William Weeks explains that anyone with sworn allegations can approach the grand jury. The Aiken Grand Jury sessions end today with no citizens gathered. next session in January. The panel may subpoena witnesses or documents and issues recommendations on county operations and law enforcement.
Latin American refugees at the UN High Commissioner for Refugees office in Buenos Aires cut food supplies after demanding passage to any country. They will allow only medicines until their demand is met and protest living conditions for refugees in Argentina. The group seized the UN facility and issued a communique at midday Wednesday.
ABC TV did not air Ford's nationwide news conference Thursday night marking a reversal from Monday when ABC carried his tax cut speech live. CBS and NBC carried the event live, with Ford not having had a live national broadcast since June 24.
The United States weighs an ultimillion dollar aid program for Portugal including large refugee relief for Angola. Portugal already has $25 million in the current year and seeks more. a final figure could exceed $50 million. President Ford will meet with Portuguese Foreign Minister Melo Antunes to discuss the proposal.
Senator Barry Goldwater hinted he might endorse Ronald Reagan in the 1976 GOP contest but offered no firm commitment. He cited undisclosed factors and said if Reagan announces he would need a week before Goldwater would comment further.
Thomas S. Kleppe a 56 year old former North Dakota congressman and millionaire will be sworn in as the new secretary of the Interior after Senate confirmation to the $60 000 a year cabinet post. He will succeed Stanley K Hathaway who resigned last July after a brief tenure. The Senate approved Ford's nomination by voice vote.
The Ford campaign reported 696000 in contributions and 279000 spent as of Thursday. Ford dismissed criticism of a big business tie, saying the fundraising is broad-based with many donors across the country and that the accusation is silly.
Frank Galardi introduced before a Kiwanis Club talk at the Ramada Inn as public relations officer for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Department. He then clarified his role as the county’s new crime prevention officer amid light restaurant sign humor and a nod to Ogden Nash.
The public safety building at 251 Laurens St. will host a dedication on Sunday at 2 30 p m with open house to follow. The 22 000 square foot complex cost 599 570 and moved in on Sept 22 housing city fire and police, court records, permits, inspections, and specialized rooms. Twenty four firefighters and 40 police officers will operate there replacing the 1938 facility.
Israel signed the Sinai accord final document seven hours after the Senate approved a monitors provision for 200 American technicians in a buffer zone. The House followed with a 341 to 69 vote. Final action clears the way for troop pullback and Abu Rudeis oilfield return to Egypt.

Novice growers with no silver award have entries accepted 8:30 to 10:30 am, judging begins 11 am, public admitted at noon. A second event, SC Camellia Society fall meeting, follows at Houndslake Country Club at noon with visitors welcome.
Aiken County man Billy Ray Jackson was found guilty in the first jury trial of General Sessions Court. Jackson sought a jury trial on a DUI charge and faced delays as his court-appointed attorney requested time. He claimed he had only two beers and was not drunk, saying he was picked up for a fishing trip by two friends.
A lease purchase deal for a new Lower Savannah Regional Planning and Development Council headquarters was signed by Harold V. Graybeal and Jack Keel. Aiken County will seek a $117000 loan while donating land and county work to prepare the site. Construction by J E Stewart should start soon and finish in February with a prefab building matching the nearby food stamp office.
