Voters in the City of Aiken are reminded that the voter registration books close at noon tomorrow. All voters must be registered 30 days before the November 11 city council election. Residents who moved precincts must re register and reside in their current precinct three months. New city residents from another county need six months, and from another state one year. The Board of Registration is at 216 Chesterfield St.

Presiding Judge Francis Nichol handed down a 10 year prison term to 34 year old Willie Weaver also known as Willie Mundy for a September shooting in the Trenton area. The trial involves events on Haskell Dary Road and a drunken brawl at a trailer near North Augusta.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Clement F. Haynsworth Jr. 10 to 6, opening a likely floor fight. The vote followed a two hour closed debate over his business dealings, with Maryland's Charles Mathias withholding his vote and later planning to record it after seeking unshared information.
