Glen Dale Summerford a 46 year old former minister at Goosepond Pentecostal Holiness Church was charged with assault after allegedly making his wife place her hand in a snake box causing rattlesnake bites. His wife Darlene 36 was hospitalized with injuries.
The 11th annual Whole Enchilada in Las Cruces drew an estimated 100,000 people, far surpassing the planned 6,500. The giant 10 foot dish used 185 pounds of corn dough 60 gallons of red chili and 175 pounds of cheese and was declared a speedy, popular success by fiesta chairman Randy Nix.

An Ebasco Services Inc. representative stated on Tuesday that the firm has not signed any formal lease agreements with the Savannah River Research Park for office space. Elizabeth L. Boineau said Ebasco hopes to locate staff at the park if it is built and notes the company aims to fulfill a contract with Westinghouse Savannah River Company while considering a heavy water reactor project that could expand space needs nearby.
In Aiken a DOE public forum at the Aiken Conference Center stressed environmental restoration and waste management at the Savannah River Site as ongoing priorities. DOE official Lew Goldell noted slow cleanup but pledged progress, with 35 million gallons of high level waste awaiting disposal and the Defense Waste Processing Facility delayed until 1993.
Sara Beth Salley Lott recounted grabbing a gun after spotting a stolen Thunderbird behind her grandmother's Pine Street home. She fired a warning shot to halt the suspect who fled toward the woods, ending with the driver begging not to be killed.
The Aiken Planning Commission will hear Woodside Development's request to modify its master plan on Oct 17 to allow an equestrian site for a proposed Chukker Creek elementary school on 20 acres. Residents oppose due to safety concerns as Woodside also plans townhouses inside Woodside Plantation.
The school board approved a budget reduction plan to offset a 1 345 511 loss in state revenues. It cuts 686 457 from undesignated funds 167 000 from vehicle replacement 332 607 from the instructional improvement plan 63 300 from the self help program 55 936 from athletic and band matching and 40 211 from operations. The board also held 25 percent of all supply budgets until February 1992 while reviewing campus incentive money to possibly reinstate some programs.
