Citizen Pressure Forces Out Book Store From County

Belvedere and Arkenites credit citizen action and county law enforcement for pressuring Stage Five Cinema to close and leave Aiken County. Liberal Arts Inc. owned the Charleston based book store. Charges against operators were dropped after a pre trial hearing and an agreement with the corporation’s lawyer. The new ordinance forbids adult bookstores within 1500 feet of places frequented by minors and went into effect in June.

Laney Found Guilty in 1979 Augusta Rampage

A Richmond County jury found Laney, 20, guilty in a two hour crime spree that included kidnapping, rape, armed robbery and the murder of Sandra Fulmer Griffin of Clearwater. Roosevelt Bryant, 23, faces trial for the same charges. Laney testified the confession was coerced.

Aiken County SAT Scores Show Mixed Gains

Aiken County high school students scored higher than state peers but below national averages on the SAT this year. Math improved from last year while verbal slipped. County averages for 1980 were 388 verbal and 438 math, with state 375 and 409 and national 427 and 438. Dr. James I. Green comments on the mixed results.
