Schools seek funds for summer program under new accountability law

Aiken County Public Schools face a funding gap for expansion of summer school required by the new accountability law. Dr. Linda Eldridge says about 500,000 is needed, including transportation costs, to serve students not meeting grade level. If funds are unavailable, about 15 teachers may be laid off to cover costs.

Silver Bluff sanctuary named key bird area in state

The 3154 acre Silver Bluff Plantation Sanctuary along the Savannah River, aided by Audubon Society and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, is designated as one of South Carolina's five most important bird areas. It hosts wood storks and species such as bald eagles and red headed woodpeckers with managed ponds and prescribed burns to sustain feeding and breeding habitats.
