Haitian lawmakers approve a broad amnesty proposal aimed at easing political tensions. The plan outlines conditional release provisions and mechanisms for reconciliation, with details on eligibility and oversight to be set by a future decree.
Visiting artist Jeff Mather from Atlanta worked with Schofield Middle School sixth and eighth graders to design site art for a wetlands project behind Williamsburg Street. The students drew, painted, and helped choose multi colored wooden structures and benches as part of a two week residency funded by a 1500 NEA grant.
U S District Judge Matthew Perry will hear a state versus Department of Energy lawsuit at 9 30 am on November 1 in Columbia federal court. The case centers on whether an environmental impact study is required before 256 spent fuel rods from European reactors can be shipped to the Savannah River Site. DOE shipped 159 rods last week under an emergency declaration amid legal challenges including a Gov. Carroll Campbell suit. Secretary Hazel O Leary ordered the material unloaded and sent to Savannah River Site despite state objections.

A 28 year old bar owner, John Henry Green, was robbed and shot at his Road House on the Aiken Augusta Highway in Graniteville. The suspect, a white man about 30, 5 feet 10 inches, 180 pounds with blond hair, fled after a single gunshot. Green was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers in satisfactory condition. Call the Sheriff at 642-176 for tips.
Columbia Mayor Rubert Cole and Rep. John Scott campaigned in Aiken for Theodore arguing taxes should be held in line and a state lottery should be decided by voters. They contrasted Theodore’s stance with Beasley who they say votes for tax increases and opposes voter lottery approval.
