South Carolina holds line on gay marriage as appeals denied

The U.S. Supreme Court denied five state appeals to preserve bans, but experts say same sex marriages in South Carolina may come soon. Attorney General Alan Wilson will continue to defend the state ban while a federal judge weighs a lawsuit by a couple married in Washington, D.C. USC expert Donald Sanger predicts licenses could come in weeks to months, with Gov. Nikki Haley backing ongoing enforcement.

Same-sex marriages begin in Virginia and South

In Richmond and beyond, same-sex couples win marriage licenses as the Supreme Court denial allows the practice. Virginia’s 2006 ban is moot, and the 4th Circuit state bans are targeted to fall. Proponents cite civil rights progress while opponents vow ongoing legal battles.

Tennessee Couples Challenge Tennessee’s Anti Recognition Laws

The Supreme Court declined to hear appeals on same sex marriage, not affecting Tennessee where state law restricts marriage to one man and one woman. Three couples married in other states sue in federal court over Tennessee’s non recognition policies. The 6th Circuit heard arguments in August on these cases and others from Ohio Michigan and Kentucky.
