Downtown Aiken reuses the former First Citizens Bank at 135 Laurens St. S.W. as the new Administration and Finance Building. Crews lay porous pavement in the parking area to reduce storm water runoff and expect two weeks of curing before opening. The project includes removal of asbestos and updates to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and security with a drive through payment area completed.
The Aiken Jaycees launch the Disoriented Express haunted house at the former CVS in Kalmia Mall with Friday and Saturday operations from Oct 12 to 31 plus matinees on Saturdays. Tickets run 10 in advance 12 at the door with 5 canned goods for matinees. Volunteers sought.
The Aiken Newcomers' Club meets at Newberry Hall with 10 a.m. registration and a 10:15 a.m. business session, marking its 40th anniversary. Guest speaker Don Mitcham will present and lunch costs 14 dollars with reservations due by Oct. 4. The Laurens Street Bridge resumed traffic Friday after a 187 day rebuild by SCDOT. It had been closed since April 2 when part of the structure sank and a full replacement was required. Aiken City Manager Richard Pearce thanked SCDOT, crews and residents for patience.
