The Aiken Jaycees County Fair kicks off tomorrow at 6 p.m. with free admission for students holding passes and 10 ride tickets for $2. The event runs through Sunday at the fairgrounds three miles north of Aiken on U.S. 1 and features Deggeller Midway Attractions, games, prizes, and two free acts Victor the Russian Bear and Mitchell Marionettes.
Iran launched air attacks on Baghdad in retaliation for Iraqi raids while both nations claimed ground-force victories near key Iranian cities. Khomeini renewed warnings to Arab countries against aiding Iraq and rejected a cease-fire. Tehran said 15 were executed for espionage, as hostages in Iran remained unresolved.
Second grade teacher Jan Bacot investigated a student’s claim and found a small snake in the classroom. The serpent was removed from the school. Aiken student Nikki Wiley suggested naming a new dog Fido to help it learn to fight.
After a month of testimony jurors prepare for final arguments in the Abscam bribery trial of Rep. John W. Jenrette D S C The government and defense expected to rest their cases with key points over Jen low alcohol and entrapment defenses and Stowe's claim that undercover agents pressed the bribery discussion. The grand jury charged Jenrette and Stowe with splitting a $50 000 bribe offered by an FBI agent.
An appeal by a Republican candidate is likely after Circuit 4 Judge Rodney A. Peeples ordered two Democratic contenders, George Williams and Carl Hair, added to the November ballot. Election officials cited late submission and potential hardship if names were omitted.
Debra S. McCollum a fifth grade teacher at Downer Elementary is named Aiken County teacher of the year for 1980 81. Jack D. Thompson principal of Millbrook Elementary is named supportive educator of the year. Runner up is Janice Price Bell an eighth grade math teacher at North Augusta Junior High.
