NASA Faces New Shuttle Trouble Ahead of Discovery Launch
NASA wrestled with further shuttle problems as Discovery's launch loomed while investigators examined a 9 feet long bright yellow beam left inside Atlantis. A federal judge was to rule on whether the nuclear powered sun probe mission could proceed. The beam, found during Atlantis hoist, dented insulation and plumbing in the engine area. Kennedy Space Center director Forrest McCartney said the beam was left by an experienced crew and paperwork claimed removal. An investigative team was formed to review Atlantis procedures and Discovery paperwork.
