Reykjavik meeting fuels European hopes on arms limits
Western European allies welcomed the Reagan Gorbachev talks in Reykjavik and expect the meeting to push a reduction of medium range missiles in Europe and possible progress on a chemical weapons ban. Britain Germany and France voiced cautious optimism while the French noted prudence in progress. In Washington the White House asked the FBI to probe sources of a report about a plan to mislead journalists on Libya and to identify sources for Wall Street Journal and Washington Post stories.

Pentagon Plans Up To Six Thousand Two Hundred Officer Cuts
The Defense Department begins planning to reduce active-duty officers by as many as 6,200 over the next year amid congressional pressure to rebalance the enlisted to officer ratio. Assistant Secretary Chapman Cox notes both houses favor officer reductions but differ on timing. The four services currently maintain a 5.9 to 1 enlisted to officer ratio, the lowest in a decade, with officers making up about 14.4 percent of the active force at end of 1985. House and Senate plans differ yet both aim for sizable cuts starting in fiscal 1987, potentially trimming about 26,000 officers over four years under one proposal.
