After a lengthy filibuster the Senate approved federal deregulation of natural gas prices by 50 to 46. The House opposed deregulation, so the matter goes to a House-Senate conference committee for final resolution.
Maynard Jackson wins a second term in Atlanta with over 60 percent amid praise of race relations. Ralph Perk concedes after defeat. Albany’s mayoral race heads to an Oct 18 runoff between James H Gray Sr. and Mary Young, a black attorney who sued over district redrawing. David Rusk defeats incumbent Harry Kinney in Albuquerque by over 40 points.
New York AP report says a selective five day old strike by East and Gulf Coast longshoremen could broaden to all cargo if no deal is reached by Monday. Anthony Scotto of the International Longshoremen's Association cautions about Taft Hartley and an 80 day cooling off period, while rank and file workers in New Orleans vow to keep the action at the nation’s second largest port.
Senator Bob Dole releases a confidential cable quoting a Panamanian negotiator who warns against U.S. use of the word intervention. Dole proposes amendments to the treaty as he testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The cable cites defense sections drafted by U.S. military advisers.
TV star Telly Savalas prepared to give a deposition in a Florida murder case where Ronny Zamora seeks temporary insanity claims tied to TV violence. Judge Paul Baker will decide if Savalas can testify for the defense after Zamora's lawyer Ellis Rubin cited a Kojak inspired pattern.
Judge John J. Sirica reduced the 242 eight year terms of John N. Mitchell John D. Ehrlichman and H R Halderman to 14 years and remarked it could be his last major Watergate ruling. He had earned the nickname Maximum John for harsh sentences. The three men spoke in court as their voices appeared on tape alongside the drama of the case.
Jamie Cole broke the hula hoop record at a local disco contest. Mrs Cole trains regularly as a weight loss exercise using earphones and music while hooping. A separate group traveled to the Carolina Georgia game in a motorhome with mixed fan loyalties.
An ordinance approving a construction contract with Cecil's Inc. of Spartanburg passes first reading. The $1.452 million project will start with $250,000 and may require two more $250,000 injections, all to be deducted from the total. The seven acre site beside Aiken Community Hospital is to be used, with a liaison committee named.
The Aiken Jaycees reported strong opening night turnout for the ninth annual County Fair with attendance higher than last year’s first night. The ribbon cutting featured Mayor H Odell Weeks and other officials, praising perfect weather and smooth operations.
Aiken area expects sunny and crisp fall weather for tomorrow with a high in the low 80s and a low around the upper 40s. Rain chances are minimal tonight and about 10 percent tomorrow, followed by partly cloudy skies Friday through Sunday.
Bobby Bowers reports to local officials that a new precinct remap can be drawn in about two weeks and may not take effect until December 1978. Justice Department and Census Bureau will pre clear the plan and send it to the General Assembly for approval.
Israeli Foreign Minister Dayan and President Carter announced a tentative formula for a Geneva peace conference. The plan may be amended and must win support from Israel and Arab states, with 1967 and 1973 UN resolutions remaining the basis for resuming talks. Lebanon could join the participants, and Carter planned talks with Lebanon’s foreign minister.
