U S District Judge John J Sirica orders two motions to dismiss subpoenas for former President Richard M Nixon’s testimony sealed until jurors and alternates are selected. He suggested jury selection could finish early next week.
North Vietnamese forces overran the district town of Chuong Nghia in the central highlands after a 9,000 round artillery barrage. The garrison fled and hundreds of soldiers and civilians were reported missing as much of the military base was destroyed.
Beginning January 1, 23.5 million Medicare beneficiaries will pay 9.5 percent more out-of-pocket for hospitalization due to inflation.
A compromise bill to overhaul federal election funding was approved in initial form by Senate and House conferees. The plan caps campaign contributions and expenditures and allows tax funds to cover presidential race costs, with $20 million per major party candidate in general elections and up to $5 million for nomination subsidies, yet $10 million spending limits apply.
